USCG Chilula WMEC 153
This incredible model is a Chilula in a Bottle. Its the property of Nafts member, Larry Richter, a former crew member. The model was made by Charles Hand, a retired design engineer from the Charleston Naval Shipyard in Charleston, SC. His hobby is ship in the bottle model making and he has been doing it for years. To give you an idea of the true size of this model Larry has placed an item next to it in the photo. Astonishing workmanship. How the heck was it done? In 1989 Charles entered a contest in Newburyport, Mass and won second place with a Chilula model. He consulted on the original model with Cdr. R. S. Muller who was captain of CHILULA at that time. Larry persuaded Charles to make a model for him. Charles retired in June of 1993 and now lives in North Carolina. He still builds ship in a bottle models.
